Thailand pursues World Heritage status for Andaman Sea and historical parks to boost tourism and preservation efforts

Thailand has set its sights on securing World Heritage status for the Andaman Sea and two historical parks, with the aim of preserving these areas and boosting the local economy and tourism industry.

The National Committee on the Protection of World Heritage, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan, has approved the nomination of the Andaman Sea conservation area as a potential World Heritage Site. The conservation area encompasses parts of Ranong, Phang Nga, and Phuket provinces, and its designation as a World Heritage Site could bring significant economic opportunities for residents in the region.

In addition to the Andaman Sea, the committee also reviewed the progress of the nomination for Si Thep Historical Park in Petchabun province and Phu Phra Bat historical park in Udon Thani province. The committee has approved the necessary documents for the nomination, which will be presented at the World Heritage Committee meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from September 10-25.

The meeting also covered plans for the development of other areas, including Phetchaburi, Takua Pa, Mae Hong Son, Kanchanaburi, Yala, and other historical locations. Relevant authorities have been tasked with overseeing the issues discussed at the meeting and making preparations for the development and preservation of these historical sites.

The push for World Heritage status highlights Thailand’s commitment to preserving its cultural and natural heritage while also promoting sustainable tourism. The country has a wealth of cultural and natural attractions that draw millions of visitors each year, and the effort to obtain World Heritage status for these areas demonstrates Thailand’s commitment to protecting and showcasing its unique heritage for generations to come.
