Tragic Expressway Accident Triggers Probe and Heavy Fines for Contractor

In the wake of a devastating accident that claimed a life and caused extensive damage, the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) has launched a thorough investigation. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, May 7, involved a catastrophic failure of a precast beam on the Rama III-Bangkok western ring road expressway project, resulting in its collapse onto the Rama II road. In response, EXAT has imposed an initial fine of 210 million baht on the responsible contractor.

EXAT Governor Surachet Laophulsuk confirmed that multiple parties are now involved in scrutinizing the circumstances surrounding the accident. A construction worker tragically lost their life in the incident, and four cars were severely damaged by the falling beam. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Governor Surachet emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation.

As part of the immediate measures taken by EXAT, construction activities have been suspended for a period of seven days. In addition, the contractor involved, CTB Joint Venture, will face a daily fine of up to 30 million baht, as stipulated in its contract with EXAT. The severity of the penalties serves as a clear message that the authorities are determined to hold the responsible party accountable for the catastrophic outcome.

To ensure a thorough and impartial investigation, EXAT has extended an invitation to the esteemed Engineering Institute of Thailand. This collaboration aims to leverage the expertise of the institute and gather insights from all relevant stakeholders. Governor Surachet expressed his expectation that this joint effort would shed light on the exact causes of the accident and help prevent similar incidents in the future.

Governor Surachet further stressed that if the investigation concludes that the accident was the result of negligence or irresponsibility, EXAT will not hesitate to take legal action against the contractor. Furthermore, any findings of misconduct will result in a ban on future contracts between the company and the state agency. This firm stance underscores EXAT’s commitment to upholding safety standards and ensuring accountability in the construction industry.

As the investigation unfolds, the affected parties and the public at large eagerly await the results, seeking answers and reassurance that such tragedies can be avoided through stringent oversight and responsible practices.
