Thailand Establishes Human Rights Development Institute to Promote Respect and Awareness

In a significant move towards fostering a culture of respect for human rights throughout Thai society, the Ministry of Justice has inaugurated the Human Rights Development Institute. Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam presided over the institute’s opening, recognizing it as a crucial entity in advancing human rights principles across Thailand.

The institute has set out several key objectives, including the cultivation of a societal environment where human rights are upheld at all levels. Additionally, it aims to enhance public awareness of individual rights, freedom, and responsibilities.

During the inauguration, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu emphasized the intrinsic connection between rights, freedom, and responsibilities. He underscored the importance of recognizing and embracing human rights, emphasizing that such rights are fundamental to our shared humanity. Mr. Wissanu cited an example, stating that if individuals are aware of their right to clean air, they are more likely to actively engage in efforts to combat air pollution.

The Human Rights Development Institute is expected to play a pivotal role in promoting knowledge and understanding of human rights across various sectors, including the government, civil society, and the general public.

Ruangsak Suwaree, the Director General of the Rights and Liberties Protection Department, expressed hope that the institute would serve as a vital mechanism for driving the government’s human rights agenda forward.

The establishment of the Human Rights Development Institute signals Thailand’s commitment to elevating human rights standards and promoting a society that values and safeguards the rights of its citizens.
