Thailand Hosts International Sericulture Commission Meeting to Boost Global Silk Industry Development

The Department of Sericulture takes center stage as it hosts the prestigious annual International Sericulture Commission (ISC) meeting. This significant gathering brings together representatives from six countries, converging to deliberate on crucial strategies for the global advancement of the sericulture industry. Scheduled from May 21-28, the conference holds additional significance as Thailand proposes the establishment of World Silk Day.

Under the guidance of Prakob Phaophong, the esteemed Director-General of the Department of Sericulture, and Sutira Pholcharoen, an agricultural specialist and silk product development expert, Thailand warmly welcomes delegates from India, Romania, Bangladesh, Uganda, Japan, and prominent local representatives. This marks the fifth occasion that Thailand has proudly hosted the ISC meeting, a testament to its unwavering dedication towards fostering the growth and prosperity of the sericulture sector.

The week-long event encompasses a diverse range of topics, encapsulating ISC’s activities over the past year, progress updates on the Make The Label Count (MTLC) campaign, ISC training programs, silk standard testing and grading, and Thailand’s compelling proposal to designate August 12 as World Silk Day.

Beyond the conference sessions, the delegates actively engage in enlightening field visits and enriching study tours from May 22-28. These excursions involve immersive interactions with agricultural groups in the captivating Chachoengsao province, explorations of textile and product manufacturing facilities, as well as visits to prominent exhibition centers in the picturesque Nakhon Ratchasima province. The delegates will be granted exclusive access to Chul Thai Silk Co Ltd and sericulture industrial farmers in the enchanting Phetchabun province, providing them with invaluable insights into Thailand’s thriving silk industry.

Established in 1960, the International Sericultural Commission (ISC) stands as an intergovernmental organization registered with the United Nations, tirelessly striving to foster scientific, economic, and related endeavors within the realm of sericulture. Presently headquartered in Bangalore, India, the ISC provides its esteemed members with the prestigious platform to present groundbreaking research findings at the esteemed World Sericulture Congress, a triennial event of paramount importance.

By proposing the institution of World Silk Day and fostering international collaboration within the sericulture community, Thailand aims to showcase the extraordinary cultural heritage and immense economic potential of the silk sector. With an unwavering commitment to sustainability, Thailand aspires to ensure the long-lasting prosperity and growth of the sericulture industry for generations to come.
