Bangkok Takes Action Against Rising Diabetes Risk with “Diabetes-Free Thais” Campaign

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has initiated the “Diabetes-Free Thais” campaign to tackle the alarming prevalence of diabetes among city residents. Launched in 2022 by the Diabetes Association of Thailand and Merck Thailand, the campaign aims to raise awareness about pre-diabetic conditions and the critical importance of early detection and treatment to slow down the progression of diabetes.

In a survey conducted during last year’s campaign, it was revealed that a staggering 73% of the 7,500 participants were at a high risk of developing diabetes. Consequently, the Diabetes Association sought the support of the BMA in spreading awareness among targeted groups within the city.

BMA Deputy Governor Tavida Kamolvej emphasized that a significant number of Thailand’s over 5 million diabetic patients reside in major urban centers like Bangkok. The city lifestyle, characterized by busy schedules and limited time for exercise and healthcare, contributes to the increased likelihood of developing diabetes.

To address this pressing issue, the BMA’s Health Department plans to adopt proactive and passive measures to identify individuals at risk within each community. These individuals will be provided with appropriate treatment and health guidance. Additionally, healthcare professionals and volunteers will conduct door-to-door campaigns to emphasize the significance of primary healthcare and early disease detection, which can result in substantial long-term cost savings on treatment expenses.

Tavida expressed optimism that through this collaborative campaign, the city’s primary healthcare standards will be elevated, potentially paving the way for future initiatives such as the establishment of specialized hospitals and research institutes dedicated to diabetes prevention and treatment.
