Hospitals in Bangkok Reveal Ample Capacity to Accommodate More COVID-19 Patients

Hospitals in Bangkok, overseen by the Department of Medical Services (DMS), have affirmed their readiness to accommodate additional COVID-19 patients, ensuring that they currently possess sufficient capacity. The Director-General of the DMS, Dr Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, confirmed that just over 22% of the beds in these hospitals are presently occupied.

In a recent meeting, Dr Thongchai emphasized that despite a surge in COVID-19 infections coinciding with the start of the new school semester, the majority of patients experience mild or no symptoms, making it feasible for them to receive treatment at home. However, he highlighted a rise in the number of patients seeking hospital treatment for acute respiratory infections (ARI). Consequently, hospitals have taken proactive measures by implementing after-hours services and establishing separate screening areas within emergency wards to cater to these patients, ensuring their segregation from others.

At present, hospitals under the purview of the Department of Medical Services are treating approximately 2,500 COVID-19 patients, resulting in an occupancy rate of 22.41%.

Dr Thongchai sought to reassure the public, stating that the department’s hospitals possess ample beds and medical supplies to accommodate an influx of cases, as well as attending to other patients in need of medical attention during normal circumstances.

Among the medical facilities falling under the jurisdiction of the Department of Medical Services are Lerdsin, Rajavithi, Nopparat Rajathanee, and the Central Chest Institute of Thailand.
