In a somber turn of events, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has ordered an immediate halt to the construction of a bridge over the bustling Bang Kapi intersection. This decision follows a fatal accident that occurred on-site, resulting in the unfortunate demise of a worker who was struck by a falling steel plate.
The incident transpired during a construction project aimed at enhancing the Lat Phrao-Seri Thai Bridge that spans the Bang Kapi intersection. The construction team was in the process of bolstering the bridge’s underbelly by affixing steel plates. This operation involved the use of a crane and hoist to position the plates beneath the bridge’s structure, connecting them to the underlying girder framework.
Investigations into the tragic occurrence have revealed that the accident was a direct consequence of the contractor’s failure to adhere to proper installation protocols. Due to this lapse, the steel plate dislodged from its support point on the hoist and plummeted to the ground below. The unfortunate incident claimed the life of one worker, while another suffered injuries. The accident did cause a temporary traffic disruption, though the prompt response from authorities ensured minimal inconvenience to road users.
The BMA’s initial response has been to temporarily suspend all construction activities related to the project. The administration is determined to prioritize safety and is working closely with the contractor to implement enhanced safety measures and procedures. These measures will encompass everything from revised installation protocols to thorough damage assessments and remedial actions for those affected.
To prevent future mishaps of this nature, the contractor has promptly established barricades around the incident site, with further traffic closures planned between the hours of 22:00 and 05:00. Additionally, Sompote Kwangkaew, deputy director-general of the Labour Protection and Welfare Department, has announced that representatives of the contracting firm will be called in for questioning to ascertain compliance with safety requirements.
The tragic loss of Anan Longsri, the deceased worker, has prompted discussions about compensation for his family. In recognition of his dedicated service, the family will receive 50,000 baht to cover funeral expenses, along with compensation equivalent to 120 months of Anan’s salary, totaling approximately 1.5 million baht. Furthermore, his pension of 46,000 baht will also be provided.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Public Works Department has issued a stern directive to all contractors involved, emphasizing the utmost importance of personal safety measures. Special attention is being given to the use of protective equipment, especially when working at elevated heights. The BMA, along with the Construction Control Division of the Department of Civil Works, is collaborating to establish a safety task force. This group will conduct thorough inspections, provide guidance for improvement, and enforce stringent safety regulations to ensure that such unfortunate incidents are prevented moving forward.
