Bangkok, October 10, 2023 – In the bustling streets of Bangkok, the issue of homelessness has emerged as a pressing concern, driven by a multitude of complex factors. Taking a bold step to confront this predicament, government agencies orchestrated the “Homeless Day” event, a platform aimed at providing welfare guidance and amplifying the voices of the homeless, as they express their aspirations and needs.
Set against the backdrop of the serene Shrine of Mae Thorani in the heart of the Phra Nakhon district, this event unfolded in perfect synchrony with World Homeless Day on October 10th. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration spearheaded the initiative, underlining the government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring a high quality of life and appropriate welfare for the city’s homeless and underprivileged population. Central to this mission is a strategic approach to budget allocation and a drive to empower local governing bodies, thus fostering a more equitable society for all citizens.
Participating in the event, attendees had access to a wide array of welfare services and resources, such as the issuance of national ID cards, courtesy of the dedicated team on-site. Additionally, attendees could benefit from haircuts provided by the Central Women and Family Development Center in Nonthaburi, essential health check-ups, and a range of recreational activities, replete with enticing prizes.
The urgency of the matter has only been magnified by the recent surge in homelessness, affecting approximately 1,000 individuals not just in Bangkok but also in neighboring provinces like Chonburi and Chiang Mai. The relentless onslaught of COVID-19 has further exacerbated the situation. In light of this challenging reality, government agencies are fervently advocating for local governments to assume a more proactive role in addressing homelessness. This transition, which was initiated in 2022, signifies a pivotal stride towards bolstering support for this exceptionally vulnerable community.
