Prime Minister Urges Swift Action on Rama II Highway Woes

In response to mounting concerns regarding ongoing construction issues plaguing the Rama II highway, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has issued a directive to the Transport Ministry. The aim is to swiftly address these challenges, with a particular focus on alleviating traffic congestion prior to the upcoming Songkran holiday period. The directive follows growing apprehension voiced on social media platforms regarding the impact of construction delays on travel to Hua Hin, a sought-after destination situated approximately 200 kilometers south of Bangkok.

The impetus for this directive stemmed from a notable post on a travel page, where discussions highlighted the quieter atmosphere in Hua Hin due to Bangkok residents opting to steer clear of the notorious Rama II traffic snarls. Prime Minister Srettha emphasized the urgent need to expedite the completion of the delayed Rama II project. This, he asserted, is crucial in facilitating smoother travel conditions ahead of the Songkran festival, a period characterized by heightened traffic volumes. Furthermore, he pledged personal oversight of the situation to address public grievances and ensure accountability among contractors failing to meet their obligations.

Despite assertions portraying Hua Hin as desolate due to Rama II’s construction woes, local residents have countered such depictions. They report sustained tourist activity in the area, challenging claims of a significant decline attributed to the highway’s conditions.

The Rama II highway, serving as a vital artery connecting Thailand’s southern regions, has long been plagued by protracted construction phases, often humorously dubbed as “seven generations of construction.” Safety concerns, including accidents and incidents of falling debris, have further compounded the challenges faced by commuters and travelers alike.

Efforts to mitigate these issues are underway, with the Prime Minister’s directive signaling a concerted push to expedite construction and alleviate traffic congestion, particularly in anticipation of the forthcoming Songkran festivities. As stakeholders navigate these challenges, heightened attention is directed towards ensuring the timely completion of the Rama II project and enhancing overall road safety standards.
