Thailand Consumer Council to Test Decade-Old Rice Quality

The Thailand Consumer Council (TCC) has taken proactive measures to assess the quality of rice procured a decade ago through the controversial rice pledging scheme under the Yingluck Shinawatra government. This initiative aims to ensure the safety of the rice for both human and animal consumption.

In response to growing concerns, the TCC swiftly dispatched an urgent letter to Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, requesting samples of rice from all millers for thorough testing by accredited laboratories. The results of these tests are anticipated to be made publicly available, fostering transparency and consumer confidence.

Saree Aongsomwang, the Secretary-General of the TCC, emphasized the council’s access to experts in food, medicine, and health products. She indicated readiness to establish a dedicated working group if deemed necessary to address this issue comprehensively.

Highlighting potential health risks, Aongsomwang urged the government to reconsider plans for exporting the old rice should tests reveal contamination with toxins or carcinogens.

Recently, Phumtham led a delegation comprising reporters and commerce officials to a warehouse in Surin province for an on-site inspection of the stored rice. Samples were consumed during the visit, reportedly washed 15 times before cooking. Phumtham later asserted the rice’s edibility, announcing intentions to export it to unspecified African countries.
