The government is considering lifting the afternoon ban on alcohol sales to support restaurant operators struggling due to the faltering economy. Representatives of the Restaurant Business Club delivered a letter to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Tuesday, urging the government to help restaurants endure these challenging economic conditions.
The restaurant operators highlighted that rising operating costs and ingredient prices are compounding their difficulties, leading many businesses to shut down. One significant measure they are advocating for is the removal of a 52-year-old rule that bans the sale of alcohol between 2 pm and 5 pm.
“I will consider it,” said Prime Minister Srettha on Tuesday regarding the potential lifting of the afternoon alcohol sales ban. “The government is trying to promote tourism, hoping they will also earn more income,” he added, addressing the concerns of restaurant operators.
Several officials and stakeholders were present during the meeting, expressing their views and emphasizing the need for timely governmental support to ensure the survival and growth of the restaurant industry amid these economic challenges.
