Bangkok Governor Probes Bueng Makkasan Fish Deaths

Today, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt visited Bueng Makkasan in Ratchathewi district to probe into a recent surge of fish fatalities. Primarily Nile tilapia, alongside some blackchin tilapia, perished, likely due to decreased water levels caused by preparations by the Department of Drainage and Sewerage for impending rainwater. This decline likely led to oxygen scarcity, endangering aquatic life.

Bueng Makkasan is linked to Samsen Canal and Saen Saep Canal, ultimately flowing into Khlong Tan, with a drainage passage extending to Chong Nonsi. Concerns have been raised about the blackchin tilapia’s potential spread, with reports of 30 kilograms of the species caught within an hour. District authorities, including the 58-year-old Bangkok chief, are cautious that if blackchin tilapia proliferates here, it could disseminate to other locales.

Although operations to maintain water treatment equipment, conducted from 3 a.m. to 11 p.m. yesterday, led to decreased oxygen levels, subsequent restoration of equipment functionality anticipates an improvement in conditions, as reported by KhaoSod. Nevertheless, comprehensive investigations are essential to ascertain the exact cause of fish fatalities, assess water quality, and manage potential species expansion. District authorities pledge vigilant monitoring to curtail further spread.
