Minimum wage set to rise to 400 baht in October

BANGKOK (NNT) – The tripartite wage committee is moving ahead with plans to increase the minimum wage to 400 baht, with an important meeting scheduled for September 20, 2024.

Labour Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn confirmed that the committee can proceed with a vote even if representatives from employers are absent, provided a two-thirds majority is reached among the remaining members. He expressed confidence that the wage increase will take effect by October 1, 2024, as initially proposed.

While acknowledging concerns from employers regarding the wage hike, Phiphat emphasized that the Ministry of Finance is developing relief measures to support businesses that may be adversely affected. These measures are expected to be announced in conjunction with the new wage.

When questioned about potential legal actions from employers opposing the increase, Minister Phiphat remained optimistic. He stated that the policy is rooted in good intentions and that he is prepared for various outcomes, including lawsuits in the Administrative Court. He highlighted that the wage increase is designed to meet the needs of both workers and businesses while minimizing disruptions to the economy.

The wage hike represents a significant commitment from the Pheu Thai-led government, and Phiphat reiterated his determination to see this promise fulfilled, reflecting the administration’s focus on improving living standards for workers.
