Andaman Riviera Road Project Report Set for February Completion

The final report on Thailand’s ambitious Andaman Riviera project, a 50-billion-baht infrastructure initiative to construct more than 600 kilometers of roads along the Andaman coast, is expected to be completed by February, according to the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning. The project is designed to enhance connectivity across six provinces—Ranong, Phangnga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang, and Satun—and aims to promote economic development by attracting international tourists and improving logistical networks.

Speaking at a public hearing in Phuket on October 21, Chaiwat Sangkhaphak, director of the office’s division for transport and traffic system development, confirmed that construction on the project will likely begin three to four years after the report is endorsed by the cabinet. The hearing, attended by around 40 local officials and residents, was part of an ongoing effort to gather public opinion on the proposed route of the coastal road. The feedback from these hearings will be compiled into a report and submitted to the Ministry of Transport for further review.

The Andaman Riviera project aims to create a comprehensive road network by linking existing roads and upgrading routes that pass through scenic areas. Some sections, particularly those near protected zones like national parks or coastal reserves, may require additional environmental impact assessments.

The new road system is expected to not only boost tourism but also improve the region’s logistical capacity, facilitating the transportation of both passengers and cargo. As demand for transport in the area is projected to increase over the next two decades, the project is seen as key to attracting more investment and fostering economic growth.

In a related development, Watcharaphong Chiso, director of Phuket administration’s strategies and information for development division, expressed concern over the island’s budget allocation for tourism development. Despite Phuket contributing 380 billion baht to the national economy in the previous year, it only received a budget of 169 million baht for tourism development, a figure he argues is insufficient for the island’s needs given its critical role in Thailand’s economy.

The Andaman Riviera project is part of broader efforts to transform Thailand into a major hub for regional transport and tourism, especially along its western coastline.
