Cruise Tourism Revitalizes Koh Samui Economy

International cruise tourism is bringing renewed economic vitality to Koh Samui, with 24 cruise ship visits scheduled between October 2024 and April 2025. On November 5, the Celebrity Solstice, a German-flagged vessel carrying 2,830 international tourists, anchored in Nathon Bay as part of its extensive itinerary. Approximately 1,280 of these visitors participated in organized tours around Koh Samui, while others explored the island independently, contributing an estimated 3 to 5 million baht to the local economy.

Coordinated efforts by the Koh Samui District Office, the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Koh Samui branch, and customs officials ensured a smooth experience for the influx of tourists. The Celebrity Solstice is scheduled for 11 additional visits to the island this season, with Laem Chabang Port in Chonburi as its next stop before continuing to Vietnam.

Ratchaporn Phoonsawas, President of the Koh Samui Tourism Promotion Association, highlighted that the return of cruise tourism offers a substantial economic benefit for local businesses. Between October 2024 and April 2025, Koh Samui anticipates 24 cruise ships carrying between 1,300 and over 3,000 passengers per vessel. These visitors, drawn by the island’s natural beauty, cultural attractions, seafood, and artisan products, contribute significant spending that bolsters the local economy.

According to a report from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Surat Thani province, which includes Koh Samui, rose to the eighth most-visited province in Thailand, up from 10th place in 2023. The region experienced a 24.49% increase in visitor numbers from January to September 2024, as Chonburi led national tourism growth at 36.58%.
