Lao Market Demolished to Restore Sidewalks in Khlong Toei

In the early hours of December 2, 2024, Bangkok city workers began dismantling the Lao Market on Rama IV Road in Khlong Toei district, marking the end of the longstanding street market. The operation, supervised by Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, included the removal of metal fences, roofing, and concrete pillars to restore approximately 300 meters of sidewalk for pedestrian use.

The demolition followed months of planning, with city officials working closely with vendors to ensure a smooth transition. Governor Chadchart expressed gratitude for the vendors’ cooperation, noting, “They’ve set a great example in helping make our city cleaner.” He acknowledged the challenges faced by vendors but emphasized the importance of reclaiming public spaces.

Deputy Governor Chakkaphan Phewngam reported that vendors vacated the area by the evening of December 1, with some relocating to the newly renovated Khlong Toei Market 2. The revamped facility offers 400 stalls, 79 of which have been allocated to Lao Market vendors, with reduced rental fees negotiated to ease the transition.

The Lao Market, known for its Northeastern Thai produce and operating under a temporary permit since 2005, had faced several extensions after its permit was revoked in 2018 due to economic hardships. The permanent closure, announced on November 7, paves the way for improved pedestrian access and upgraded infrastructure, including relocated bus stops along the sidewalk.
