Chinese Man Caught in $6M Bitcoin Fraud at Thai Airport

A Chinese national was arrested at Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport on June 12, 2025, in connection with an alleged $6.15 million Bitcoin fraud following a warrant issued by Chiang Rai Provincial Court.

Thai immigration authorities detained a 39-year-old Chinese man, identified as Tianwei, at Don Mueang International Airport as he attempted to board a flight to Singapore. He is accused of defrauding two fellow Chinese nationals in a cryptocurrency deal valued at approximately 200 million baht, or $6.15 million.

The incident stems from a business meeting held in Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district on April 23, where the victims transferred a large amount of Bitcoin to Tianwei’s digital wallet. They later filed a complaint at Mae Sai Police Station on April 30, claiming no returns were received as promised.

On May 16, the Chiang Rai Provincial Court issued a warrant for Tianwei’s arrest. Immigration authorities were alerted after receiving intelligence that he planned to leave the country via Lion Air flight SL100. Officers stationed at the international terminal apprehended him at 6:00 a.m. after confirming his identity.

The suspect reportedly spoke in English during the arrest and denied prior detention in relation to the case. He was informed of his legal rights through an interpreter from the Don Mueang Immigration checkpoint and was subsequently transferred to Mae Sai Police Station for further legal processing.

Officials present during the arrest included members of the immigration police and checkpoint commander Sergeant Suwaphan Utsaha, who facilitated communication between the suspect and authorities.
