Thailand set to host F1 races from 2028

Thailand is preparing to host Formula 1 races starting in 2028, following cabinet approval on June 17, 2025, to pursue a five-year agreement pending authorization from Formula One’s governing bodies.

The Thai cabinet has greenlit a proposal from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports to bid for hosting rights to Formula 1 races over a five-year span beginning in 2028. The plan, which remains contingent on final approval from the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and associated F1 entities, signals Thailand’s intent to join the global motorsport calendar.

According to the Ministry, the projected cost for organizing the event series is approximately 40 billion baht across five years. Budget allocations will be subject to annual cabinet review and approval. The financial commitment underlines the government’s broader strategy to promote high-profile international events as a driver for tourism and economic activity.

Preliminary project planning has been conducted by the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau in coordination with the Formula One Group, which handles the sport’s commercial operations. Details of the proposed venue and logistics are expected to be finalized within the necessary timeframe.

The selection of host locations for Formula 1 depends on several critical factors including compliance with FIA safety regulations, particularly a Grade 1 license for circuits, commercial negotiations led by Liberty Media, and the overall financial viability of the event.

Further specifics on the proposed Thai circuit and schedule will follow in coordination with international motorsport authorities. Attendance at the cabinet session included officials from relevant ministries, though their names were not disclosed in the formal announcement.
