Chart Thai Pattana, Prachachart Stand by Government Amid Turmoil

Amid mounting political uncertainty following a leaked phone call involving Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, two coalition parties—Chart Thai Pattana and Prachachart—have confirmed they will continue supporting the government, citing national stability and security concerns.

On 20 June 2025, Chart Thai Pattana Party leader Varawut Silpa-archa announced that the party would remain within the ruling coalition. Speaking after a meeting of the party’s executive committee and its ten Members of Parliament, Varawut stated that the group reached a consensus after a two-hour discussion, concluding that there was insufficient verified information to justify a withdrawal. He noted that the controversial phone conversation between Prime Minister Paetongtarn and former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen had only come to their attention less than a day earlier.

Varawut emphasized that national sovereignty and security must take precedence, adding that while he had not personally spoken with the prime minister about the matter, the party agreed that political stability must be preserved.

The United Thai Nation Party, led by Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga, also held internal discussions but has not yet disclosed a decision. Pirapan stated that he would confer directly with the prime minister before announcing the party’s stance. A party source indicated that members may not oppose replacing Paetongtarn with Chaikasem Nitisiri, a previous Pheu Thai prime ministerial candidate, though no official decision has been declared.

Meanwhile, Prachachart Party leader Tawee Sodsong confirmed on 19 June 2025 that his party would continue to back the government. Tawee, who also serves as justice minister, underscored the party’s commitment to parliamentary processes and support for the military and government institutions.

Following the withdrawal of the Bhumjaithai Party—previously the second largest member of the coalition—Tawee highlighted the importance of full attendance by remaining government MPs in upcoming parliamentary debates. Prachachart currently holds nine seats in the House of Representatives.

Asked about the leaked audio recording involving the prime minister, Tawee declined to comment. However, political tensions escalated as former senator Somchai Sawangkarn and two activists, Nithithorn Lamlua and Komsan Phothong, filed a criminal complaint with the Central Investigation Bureau, accusing the prime minister of violating the Criminal Code in connection with the recording.

Somchai stated that while his group calls for the prime minister’s resignation, they oppose both the dissolution of parliament and a coup, citing the risk of political instability and wasted public resources.

Representatives from other coalition parties, including Democrat Party leader Chalermchai Srion, have deferred decisions to internal party committees, which continue to evaluate their positions.
