Russian journalist robbed in Pattaya Bitcoin extortion case

PATTAYA, Thailand — June 26, 2025 — A 26-year-old Russian journalist identified as David was reportedly kidnapped, assaulted, and robbed by a group of fellow Russians in Pattaya, according to local police. The incident occurred at a hotel on Jomtien Soi 14, where the victim allegedly managed to escape while still handcuffed and sought help from local authorities.

According to a police report, David claimed he was lured to the hotel by a Russian acquaintance before being ambushed by two men dressed in black. He stated that his attackers placed a black bag over his head, beat him, and forced him to transfer cryptocurrency. In addition to seizing 40,000 baht (approximately US$1,225) in cash, the suspects also took a luxury Rolex watch valued at over 2 million baht (US$61,350).

Following the assault, the perpetrators reportedly sent a video of the attack to the victim’s girlfriend to issue further threats. Despite his injuries, the victim managed to escape and notify the police.

Chon Buri police, working in conjunction with the Transnational Crime Suppression Centre, launched an investigation led by Major General Thawatchakiat Jindakhuansanong. Authorities have detained 26-year-old Anton Lokotkov, who is accused of orchestrating the meeting that led to the attack. Lokotkov, however, has denied all allegations and refused to cooperate with investigators. He was also found to be overstaying his visa by 13 days and has been charged accordingly.

CCTV footage reviewed by investigators shows multiple individuals known to the victim entering the hotel room shortly before the reported assault at approximately 2:57 a.m. on June 26. The footage supports the victim’s claim that the parties were previously acquainted, though inconsistencies in the statements from both the victim and the detained suspect are complicating the case.

Authorities believe two suspects may have already fled Thailand. Evgenii Latyshev is thought to have escaped to Malaysia, and Ioann Berdanov reportedly traveled to Hong Kong, with investigators suggesting he may now be en route to Turkey. Two additional suspects, both foreign males seen on CCTV in black attire, have yet to be identified.

The investigation remains ongoing as Pattaya City Police continue to collect evidence and pursue the remaining suspects.
