Thailand is gearing up to host a grand ceremony in honor of Vesak, also known as Visakha Bucha Day, at the beginning of the upcoming month. This highly anticipated event will witness the participation of an impressive number of more than 3,500 esteemed monks hailing from 50 different countries, as they converge in Thailand to partake in a two-day celebration that pays homage to the sacred teachings of Buddhism.
The Sangha Supreme Council of Thailand, in collaboration with Maha Chulalongkorn Raja Vidyalaya University, the Sangha Supreme Council itself, and the Thai government, has officially announced that the Vesak festivities will take place from June 1 to June 2, 2023. This year marks the 18th edition of the esteemed event, which has established itself as a significant platform for promoting the profound principles of Buddhism and fostering cultural exchange among nations.
The splendid affair is scheduled to commence on June 1, with an impressive opening ceremony that will be presided over by none other than the distinguished Supreme Patriarch Ariyavongsagatanana. Following the inaugural ceremony, a series of enlightening seminars will be held in the afternoon at the esteemed Maha Chulalongkorn Raja Vidyalaya University. These seminars serve as a remarkable opportunity for intellectual discussions centered around the teachings of Buddhism and their contemporary relevance, providing participants with a unique chance to delve deeper into the timeless wisdom imparted by the Buddha.
On June 2, a momentous gathering of Buddhist monks and devoted followers will take place at the United Nations headquarters, situated along the prestigious Ratchadamnoen Road. The distinguished president of the Privy Council, Gen Surayud Chulanont, will lead the proceedings, symbolizing the harmonious intersection between Buddhism and the universal principles of global harmony and peace. Additionally, attendees of this grand event will have the privilege to engage in prayers and moments of contemplation at the serene and spiritually significant Phutthamonthon, located in the province of Nakhon Pathom.
As part of the preparations for Vesak Day, Suttipong Juljarern, the esteemed Permanent Secretary for Interior, has made it known that the Interior Ministry will diligently notify governors throughout Thailand to hoist the national flag alongside the revered Buddhist flag. This symbolic gesture aims to raise awareness about the significance of Vesak Day and foster a sense of unity among Thai citizens. Juljarern has also actively encouraged Thai Buddhists to enthusiastically participate in merit-making activities from June 1 to June 7, emphasizing acts of kindness, compassion, and generosity. Furthermore, as a reflection of the values upheld by Buddhism, the Permanent Secretary strongly urges individuals to abstain from gambling during this sacred period.
