Bangkok Governor Preps for Heavy Rain, Flood Prevention

In response to the looming threat of heavy rainfall in Bangkok, Governor Chatchart Sitthiphan has initiated measures to mitigate potential flooding risks. At the Bangkok Flood Prevention System Control Center on March 20, 2024, Governor Chatchart addressed the current rainfall situation, highlighting the need for immediate action.

Following reports of heavy rain traversing from east to west across Bangkok, various districts have already experienced significant precipitation. From Bang Kapi to Bang Khae, rainfall measurements ranging from 40 mm to 91.5 mm have been recorded. Particularly concerning is the situation in Din Daeng District, where floodwaters reached approximately 10 cm in some areas, causing temporary disruptions, notably near The Mall Bang Khae.

The Governor emphasized the installation of additional water pumps to alleviate flooding hotspots, notably in Soi Phetkasem 37 and 39, where water levels surged. The crisis point resides at Khlong Phasi Charoen, which has surpassed its capacity, necessitating urgent drainage efforts.

Governor Chatchart underscored the anticipation of heightened rainfall this year due to prevailing hot weather conditions. While forecasts predict scattered showers in the coming days, precautions against potential Gulf of Thailand-induced rain blowing into the capital remain imperative. Consequently, preparations have been made to deploy mobile water pumps across Thonburi to monitor canal levels and prevent flooding. Furthermore, tourism activities in the Thonburi area are to be temporarily halted to ensure public safety amidst the heightened flood risk.

As Bangkok braces for the onset of the rainy season, Governor Chatchart’s proactive measures underscore the city’s commitment to safeguarding its residents and infrastructure against the vagaries of nature.
