The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) has embarked on preparations for the esteemed Royal Barge Procession, with the initial stages set at the Thonburi Naval Dockyard on Arun Amarin Road in Bangkok Noi district. This event saw the transportation of four revered royal barges—Suphannahong, Narai Song Suban HM King Rama IX, Anantanakkharat, and Anekchatphuchong—from the National Museum of Royal Barges to the dockyard, marking the commencement of intensive training sessions.
The RTN is allowing the public to observe these rehearsals, offering a unique glimpse into the meticulous practices of the oarsmen. These sessions are held daily from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., starting today, July 10, and running until Friday. Additional rehearsals are scheduled for July 15-19 and July 23-26.
Complementing the on-site practices, the RTN has planned a series of on-water rehearsals along the Chao Phraya River. These are designed to refine both the navigational and ceremonial elements of the procession. The smaller-scale rehearsals are scheduled for August 1, 8, 15, 22, September 3, 12, 19, 26, and October 1 and 10, 2024.
The rehearsal schedule will culminate in two significant practices on October 15 and October 22, leading up to the final rehearsal on October 24, 2024. These sessions are pivotal in perfecting every aspect of the procession, from the synchronization of the rowing to the precise alignments along the river.
Officials emphasize that the presence of spectators during these practice sessions adds an element of realism and aids in fine-tuning the event. In attendance during the initial preparations were several dignitaries and officials from the RTN and other related agencies, underscoring the significance of this grand event.
