Over 13,000 passengers have used the Bangkok-Vientiane rail service since its launch in July, prompting the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) to increase capacity. On October 20, SRT Governor Veeris Ammarapala announced the addition of an extra air-conditioned carriage with sleeping beds to meet growing demand. His statement followed a meeting with Lao National Railway officials, which also addressed plans to boost freight operations through a recent cross-border transport agreement.
The rail link, which has garnered strong support since its introduction, reflects enhanced connectivity between Thailand and Laos. In a bid to further streamline freight services, SRT will also provide retired carriages to Lao Railway, focusing on improving cargo transportation between Nong Khai and Vientiane.
The Bangkok-Vientiane service operates nightly, departing from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal and arriving at Khamsavath Station in Laos the next morning. Regional connections have also expanded, with trains from Udon Thani and Nong Khai extending access to Laos. These routes link with China’s high-speed rail system, opening new travel opportunities across borders.
The collaboration between Thailand and Laos is part of a broader effort to strengthen regional rail infrastructure. With ambitions to become a central transport hub in Southeast Asia, Thailand is positioning itself to play a key role in ASEAN’s evolving rail network.
