Three popular waterfalls in Chiang Mai province were closed to the public on Sunday, 26 May 2025, as a precautionary measure following days of heavy rainfall and concerns about potential flash flooding in the area, according to park authorities.
The closures affect Mae Sa and Tat Mok waterfalls in Mae Rim district and Mok Fah waterfall in Mae Taeng district, all located within the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. The decision was prompted by observations of turbid water flows and rising creek levels, which indicate an elevated risk of flash floods in the park’s vicinity.
Authorities have also issued warnings to residents living near creeks downstream of the park, advising them to stay alert for possible overflows or sudden flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.
In central Chiang Mai, floodwaters have yet to fully recede, disrupting daily life. Commuters continue to face difficulty reaching workplaces and schools, with some choosing to relocate vehicles to higher ground—including bridges and elevated roads—to avoid flood damage.
Officials from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation stated that the waterfalls will be reopened once conditions are deemed safe for visitors.
