On 19 June 2025, the Thai government released an official statement addressing rising diplomatic tensions with Cambodia, apologizing to the Thai public while maintaining that all recent actions were undertaken to safeguard national sovereignty.
The statement followed the leak of a private phone call between Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Cambodian leadership. The government emphasized that the conversation, and all related actions, aimed to de-escalate tensions and protect the interests and safety of Thai citizens. Despite the conciliatory approach, the Thai administration expressed regret that their sincerity had not been met with similar intentions from the Cambodian side.
Thai authorities reiterated their reliance on diplomatic frameworks, particularly the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), to resolve cross-border issues. However, due to an increased risk of confrontation, the Prime Minister opted to directly engage the Cambodian leader in an effort to avert further escalation.
Following the incident, Thai security forces were placed on heightened alert, with coordination initiated at the highest military levels to monitor potential threats. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Cambodia’s ambassador in Bangkok to deliver a formal protest letter. The document expressed strong disappointment, citing a breach of established diplomatic norms by Cambodian leadership.
In concluding remarks, the government called on citizens to remain united and resist misinformation. It reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to defending Thailand’s sovereignty and ensuring public safety.
